History
The history of Statesville dates back to 1753, when Scots-Irish Presbyterians and German Lutherans migrated from Pennsylvania to Statesville, where the soil was fertile for crops, and the game and water were plentiful. The settlement was named Fourth Creek Congregation after the fresh water stream nearby that was the fourth creek west of the neighboring settlement of Salisbury. The center of the settlement was a log cabin, which still stands and is now the First Presbyterian Church.
In 1788, the state legislature divided Rowan County, and named the new county Iredell for James Iredell, an associate justice of the first Supreme Court during the presidency of George Washington. The following year, the Fourth Creek Congregation was chosen as the location of the county seat. The settlement became known as Statesville.
In 1833, the leaders of Statesville formulated plans and began laying track for railroads to connect the Piedmont region with the rest of the country. By 1858, Statesville had become a rapidly growing town, eventually becoming a leader in the production of tobacco and tobacco products, whiskey manufacturing, and the distribution of roots and herbs.
